Equalities and Human Rights
As part of West Mercia Police Authority’s role in overseeing the best possible policing and safety of the diverse communities within Herefordshire, Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin and Worcestershire area, we have an enduring commitment to ensuring that our policing services continuously uphold and develop the commitment to Equality, Diversity and Human Rights (EHR) within all aspects of its work.
We believe it is vitally important to ensure that those who may be vulnerable to crime including hate crime and discrimination are protected, and that the service has robust systems and processes to ensure that equality, diversity and human rights are firmly embedded in within the work of all officersand staff within the Constabulary.We have a good track record of working as a "critical friend" with senior officers and staff (in addition to collaborative work with Independent Advisory Groups and Independent Custody Visitors) as part of our scrutiny and governance role, and we want to ensure that this area of work remains as a core and sustainable aspect of policing business.
Equality Objective - With the incoming Police and Crime Commissioners in November of 2012 and the abolition of the Police Authority, our key objective therefore for 2012 is to ensure that we leave a strong and lasting legacy in the area of Equality, Diversity and Human Rights.
The Authority’s lead member for Equality, Diversity and Human Rights is Kate Pready-James and she chairs the Equality and Human Rights Panel. This Panel is responsible for fulfilling the Police Authority’s duties in relation to equality and diversity and a report of their work in 2010/11 can be found on pages 15 to 19 of the Annual Report.

The Police Authority developed an Equalities Scheme in 2008 and this sets out how the Police Authority promotes and delivers equality both within the organisation and externally with the community and partners, recognising the changing face of our communities and what that means in the local contact. The Police Authority also developed a Human Rights Plan to ensure that compliance with the Human Rights Act 1998 was monitored.
The Action Plans set out the Police Authority’s objectives in relation to Equality and are continually updated and reviewed.
