Shropshire Policing Board supports event for children in Oswestry

Police in Oswestry will be staging a summer holidays soccer tournament for local children aged nine to 11 and thanks to a £200 grant from the Shropshire Policing Board a trophy and medals will be bought for those taking part.

Local Policing Teams from the town and outlying areas will run the event on Sunday, August 7 at the Oswestry Boys and Girls Club, Park Hall. One of the organisers, Community Support Officer Hannah Bishop, said the all-day tournament was being held to provide positive entertainment for boys and girls during their summer holidays.

“It’s part of our diversion approach to young people where we work with our partner agencies to provide things for them to do. This approach has been highly successful in the Oswestry area and the rest of Shropshire in significantly reducing anti-social behaviour. It is also an effective way for the police to build bridges with young people and brings benefits for the whole community.”

She said it was very much a fun day with those signed having to be at the venue for 9am in good time for a 10am kick-off.

Schools have been approached by Local Policing Teams and it is hoped to have a good response from across the district. Consent forms have to be signed before youngsters can take part. CSO Bishop added: “This is the first time we have held such an event and we are hoping for a large turnout. We are grateful to the Police Authority for the grant from its community fund which will enable us to buy a trophy and medals for those playing on the day.”
