The public are invited to a Policing Matters meeting on 8 July 2010 at 7pm at Kidderminster Library in Market Street, Kidderminster, DY10 1AB.

Parents can learn to be “cooler” during an internet safety presentation at a Policing Matters meeting in Kidderminster.

There will also be a chance to quiz North Worcestershire’s Divisional Superintendent Adrian Pass at the meeting at Kidderminster Library in Market Street, on Thursday, July 8, at 7pm.

It will be chaired by Police Authority member and Chairman of North Worcestershire Policing Board, Colonel Tony Ward OBE

I hoped as many people as possible would attend, adding: “It is important the public have an opportunity to find out about how their Police Service operates and to be able to question those responsible for decision-making and delivering policing. By listening to what people have to say we hope to better understand residents’ concerns and ensure their views are taken into account.”

Superintendent Pass said: “PACT and other engagement processes help us to understand and resolve specific local problems but this meeting gives us a platform to explain and discuss longer term issues for policing in North Worcestershire, and Wyre Forest in particular.”

Although Policing Matters meetings are now in their third year it is the first time an internet safety element has been included.

The presentation on surfing safely will be given by Emma Morgan from West Mercia Police’s Public Protection Unit.

She said: “The internet is an amazing place and the primary means of communication for many young people - but there are risks. Just like water there are hidden dangers and you must know the rules to stay safe.

“Everyone has a role in safeguarding children but this is vital information if you have children, grandchildren, nieces, nephews or young cousins. It is also designed to make parents “cooler” in the eyes of children – a little bit of knowledge can be extremely powerful.

“The presentation will focus on how to use the internet safely and reduce the risks online, the power of personal information, social networking sites and, using the theme ‘think b4 u post’, how things can come back to haunt you in later years.”

Internet safety is a priority for Worcestershire Safeguarding Children Boards which promoted an awareness week in February when the subject was taken into schools and colleges. Parents were urged to log on and learn about it for the sake of their children.

The Policing Matters meeting will also include an overview of policing and performance in the North Worcester Division, highlighting Wyre Forest, reports from the chairs of local PACTs (Partners and Communities Together) and an open forum. There will be a chance to meet informally with officers at the end of the meeting.
