On 15 November 2012 the public across England and Wales will elect a Police and Crime Commissioner (PCC) who will be accountable for how crime is tackled in their police force area.
The aim of the PCC will be to cut crime and deliver an effective police service within the force area. The PCC will ensure community needs are met as effective as possible and will work in partnership across a range of agencies at local and national level to ensure there is a unified approach to preventing and reducing crime.
The PCC will not be expected to run the Police. The role of the PCC is to be the voice of the people and hold the police to account.
The Police Authority will be abolished with staff transferring to the office of the Police and Crime Commissioner in November 2012.
BRIEFINGS
Initial briefings will be held for prospective candidates for the role of Police and Crime Commissioner, at Police Headquarters, Hindlip Hall on Friday 4th May and Monday 21st May 2012.
Anyone meeting the criteria to become a PCC is very welcome to attend.

Members of the House of Commons, the Scottish and European parliaments and the National Assembly for Wales may stand, but will need to resign their seats before being able to accept the post of PCC.
PCC elections will be held in all police force areas in England and Wales on Thursday 15th November 2012, except in London, where the City of London will continue to have a police authority and the Mayor of London will take on the powers of a PCC in relation to the Metropolitan Police.
